ABOUT THE PROJECT
Description
Casa Samsara is residential project that reinterprets the traditional Ibicencan finca through a contemporary, minimalist lens. The project is designed as a series of interconnected cubic volumes that emerge organically from the arid landscape, prioritizing a low-profile silhouette that honors the horizon. By focusing on essential forms and a monochromatic earth-toned palette, the residence aims to provide a meditative retreat where the architecture acts as a silent frame for the Mediterranean light
Challenges
The primary challenge of this unbuilt project lies in the seamless integration of a modern programmatic layout within a rugged, ecologically sensitive site. The design must address high thermal performance without relying on heavy mechanical systems,
utilizing the building’s orientation and wall thickness to manage the Balearic climate naturally. Architecturally, the obstacle is to create large-scale open spaces that maintain a sense of intimacy and “human scale,” ensuring that the vast minimalist volumes
feel like a welcoming home rather than an industrial gallery.

Solutions
The proposed solution utilizes a “courtyard-centric” layout that promotes natural cross-ventilation and creates diverse microclimates throughout the property. We have designed expansive, recessed apertures that protect the interior from direct solar gain while framing specific botanical viewpoints as living art. The interior floor plan is organized around a sunken lounge and an open-plan kitchen, using subtle level changes to define functional zones without the need for physical partitions. To bridge the interior and exterior, a series of timber pergolas and light-reflective stone platforms are specified to extend the living area toward the infinity pool and the indigenous garden
