A graduate of the prestigious Ćcole dāArchitecture de Paris, Val de Seine, Robin founded RVDD Arquitectura in 2011, a firm that has now evolved into the highly regarded Illot Studio.
Recently featured in an in-depth interview with Ibiza Prestige, Robin shared the philosophy that guides his work and offered essential advice for those looking to invest in the islandās unique property market
The Philosophy of Illot Studio: Dialogue and Detail
At the heart of Illot Studio is a working method based on exchange and transparency. Robin views the design process as a collaborative journey where the client is fully involved.
“This design process is a time of exchange and dialogue,” Robin explains. “Through our drawings and 3D renders, the project owner understands their project and has full knowledge before construction begins. We are available, attentive, and responsive to every remark to define the project better.”
For Robin, architectural success is found in the smallest detailsāthe choice of forms, the honesty of materials, and the precision of the finishes. As he puts it:
“The general success of a project is recognized in the care brought to the slightest details.”
The Renovation Expert: 3 Mistakes to Avoid
In his interview with Ibiza Prestige, Robin identified three critical pitfalls that often plague Ibiza home renovations. His advice for avoiding them is a cornerstone of the Illot Studio approach:
ā Rushing the Vision: Robin emphasizes that a “big picture” plan is non-negotiable. “It is absolutely essential to have a long-term vision in place. A great plan helps with accurate building costs and eliminates the need to make bad or regretful decisions on the run.”
ā Unrealistic Budgeting: Ibizaās older structures often hide structural fatigue. “Before starting, it is important to make a detailed list of all needs with your architect, including average costs, so as not to make mistakes and incur additional expense.”
ā Ignoring the Homeās Soul: Robin believes a renovation should blend with the existing architecture. “Unless you are completely changing the natural architecture, you want to make sure your style blends with the home.”
New Build vs. Renovation: Two Concepts of Living
The choice between a new build and a renovation is a choice between two different dreams.
ā The New Build: “New building is like a child’s dream; we can adapt perfectly to the wishes of the customers and perform energetically or from an environmental point of view.”
ā The Renovation: “Renovating an old house allows us to keep the charm and cachet of the old⦠they are generally better located, though we will have to make more compromises.”
He concludes that the decision often comes down to a personal feeling: “Among these parameters, there is one which seems the most important to us: what type of habitat actually attracts meārather new, or rather old?”
Assessing the Potential
Before a client commits to a purchase, Illot Studio team utilize a rigorous assessment checklist to determine a property’s true potential:
ā Legal Compliance: Inquiring into regulations and building permits (Licencia de Obra) with the Town Hall.
ā Structural Health: Identifying high-cost repairs early.
ā Expansion Possibilities: Determining if the house can legally be extended under current Balearic laws.
