ABOUT THE PROJECT
Description
Can Cigales project focuses on the radical simplification of a traditional residence to create a modern architectural retreat. The intervention replaces a heavy, ornamental past with a streamlined aesthetic that emphasizes volumetric purity and a direct relationship with the Ibicencan pine forest. By opening the heart of the home, the design achieves a state of “monastic luxury” where light and nature become the primary decorative elements.
Challenges
The existing building was burdened by a robust, ochre-toned entrance porch with traditional arches that visually suppressed the facade. Internally, the living experience was restricted by small, dark rooms and a rustic kitchen that felt isolated from the rest of the house. The primary obstacle was to eliminate these structural and visual “weights”—including wrought-iron window bars and dated masonry—to allow the building to breathe and align with a contemporary lifestyle.

Solutions
The architectural response was a “subtractive” process: the heavy porch was removed and replaced by a sharp, horizontal roofline that creates a cleaner silhouette against the sky. We unified the living, dining, and kitchen areas into a single panoramic space, anchored by a massive oak-clad “service wall” that hides all domestic utilities. To bridge the gap between the house and the forest, we installed full-height, dark-framed glazing that acts as a lens, framing the pines as a living mural for the interior.
